Contributions to STEMM

As an orthopaedic oncologist Dr. Callan “treats both children and adults with benign and malignant tumors of bone, muscle, and soft tissue. I specialize in surgical removal of sarcomas, working with multidisciplinary teams at Children’s Health, UT Southwestern, and Parkland Hospitals,” she said. “Additionally, I frequently treat patients with metastatic bone disease to help maintain mobility and minimize risk of fractures. I also treat patients with multiple comorbidities and debilitating arthritis with hip or knee replacements.” Dr. Callan continues to grow the Sarcoma Program at UT Southwestern. She has a gift for teaching residents and medical students and a dedication to excellent, personalized patient care.

Early Influences

“Since I was a young child, my parents told me, ‘You can do anything’.”

She advises the next generation of women in medicine to “find your passion. Ignore the noise of negativity or doubt. You can be a surgeon, a physician, a scientist, an engineer, a physicist – ‘you can do anything’!” After graduating from college, she joined the Teach for America Corps to teach high school science and coach volleyball, basketball, and softball. She enjoys staying active with wakeboarding, snowboarding, and adventure.

Surgery is my passion and it allows me to develop creative solutions to reconstructing limbs and complex musculoskeletal problems.” Specifically, “as a surgeon at UT Southwestern, I get the opportunity to mentor residents and medical students daily. My patients, my trainees, my staff, and my colleagues inspire me to be a better physician.”
