“Stay focused and be true to yourself.”

Contributions to STEMM

Dr. Gattineni is a doctor and a scientist. As a pediatric nephrologist, “I see children with kidney problems.” In her laboratory, “I study a hormone, FGF23, which is increased in patients with kidney disease. Our laboratory is studying to understand its role in causing heart disease in patients with kidney disease.”

Advice for the Next Generation

Although she does not consider herself “a big risk-taker,” Dr. Gattineni has had some setbacks. Lessons learned: “Stay positive and learn from the past. Don't dwell in the negativity of one's setback.” She advises the next generation of women in STEMM to stay focused.

"Nothing is impossible for a woman to do as long as you set your mind to it. Don't be distracted by negative advice that certain careers are not meant for women. Choose your life partner wisely, as they do play an important role in your success.”

The UT Southwestern Difference

“I like the intellectual stimulation and the opportunity to take care of patients,” Dr. Gattineni said of her favorite aspects of her career. She sees her involvement in the Celebrating Breakthroughs Together Project as an opportunity “to make a lasting impression on the younger generation of women and to guide them to be successful in their careers.”
