Early Influences
Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Gimpel “was very interested in biology in high school. I had a wonderful teacher who inspired and enhanced my interests.” She took a special interest “in education as well. Both my parents were educators.”
Contributions to STEMM
Dr. Gimpel has multiple responsibilities. “My work has three components: I am a clinician who takes care of patients in the clinic and hospital, an educator who teaches learners about community medicine, and a researcher who conducts and teaches community-based research. I am passionate about decreasing health disparities in the community,” she said.
She aims to make medicine more inclusive as she focuses on culturally appropriate health care, especially as it pertains to underserved communities. Dr. Gimpel contributes to this cause as both an educator and a community advocate.
“I found a great path combining my interests in the scientific and social aspects of medicine by working in community health,” she said. “My goal is to inspire learners to think about medicine as the art of compassionate care and social interaction.”
Female Mentorship
Dr. Gimpel also champions inclusion through her affiliation with the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program. As a 2021-2022 ELAM Fellow, Dr. Gimpel is currently completing a one-year fellowship to help advance the careers of women throughout all fields of medicine. “I've been inspired by those who demonstrated true passion and dedication for education,” said Dr. Gimpel. In turn, she “hopes to inspire young girls as many other women inspired me.” She was recognized as a Distinguished Teaching Professor by the UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers in 2014.
