“Avoid putting off opportunities to advance your personal and professional goals because the timing is off, opportunity does not always knock twice.”

Contributions to STEMM

Dr. Sheehan practices clinically as a pediatric intensivist. She also holds administrative roles “to help manage patient access, throughput, physician deployment, quality improvement, and practice in Pediatrics,” she said.

Advice to the Next Generation

Dr. Sheehan “had a very broad education as a foreign graduate and was open to all opportunities,” she said.

“I never considered myself unequal to any challenge. The greatest barrier to success is a lack of belief in oneself.”

She advises the next generation of women in STEMM to “push yourself to achieve your goal and believe in your abilities.”

Taking Risks

“I don’t think you can ever achieve your career goals without taking some risk,” Dr. Sheehan said.

“Focus on the areas of your career from which you gain the most satisfaction, but also work hard on areas that you find least satisfying, rather than completely avoiding what you dislike, and you may be surprised by your success.” She noted that it is especially important to, “tune in to those around you to measure your impact.”
